Day 234 - Stir-Fried Marinated Pork with Ginger

My skill as a cook is that I won't starve. I don't eat well before the surgery, and after the surgery, I have whole categories of food that I don't tolerate well. A couple of weeks back, I started using basil in omelet. In the same batch of experiment, I also tried stir-fried marinated pork. Since I don't go and buy basil until Friday, and basil really don't last well once I take them out of the package, I have to just improvise when I don't have all of the material.

We usually buy meat in bulk from Costco and cut and stored in individual use package. Usually for steak and pork, we cut them into about 6 ounce package, with fat trimmed and stored in freezer. One of these will serve as my protein base of dinner (weekend lunch) with vegetable. While I can cook the meat straight from freezer to the cooking machine (NuWave or Geroge Foreman grill), I usually partially defrost them the night before by taking the package to the refrigerator. With the meat partially defrost, I can cut them into smaller slices and marinated.

Ages ago, when I started cooking, it is somehow ingrained in my brain about marinating meat: soy sauce, cooking spirit and corn starch. Soy sauce for the salt flavor, alcohol to tenderize the meat, and corn starch to act as a coating so the meat can retain the juice better. The proportion is usually one to one on soy sauce to the alcohol with about one tea spoon of corn starch. Mix all three ingredients into marinating container and put the sliced meat in it. Stir until the meat is thoroughly soak and leave it covered in the refrigerator. I tried to do this a day in advance, but according to my brother, it should be fine to cook marinating it for only 30 minutes. Slice ginger into narrow strips and stir fried in until slightly browned. Add a bit of sesame oil for a bit of flavor and then put in the meat and stir fried until the meat is done. Just before the meat is done, add the greens (green onion, basil if available) into the pan and stir fried until they're not raw. This is what I'm going to have for dinner tonight. I'll post a picture of it later.

Day 233 - George Foreman Grill

I've mentioned that it's only recently that I actually started to use the George Foreman grill I bought prior to surgery. Now that I'm using it, it actually works rather well. My main issue with it, as with the other cooking tool is to figure out how long to cook with frozen and non-frozen meat.

Day 232- Dealing with Stalls

In my post Weight Loss Surgery, I have to deal with stalls and even weight gain. I've learned to not be too overtly concern with it. I know this is normal, but I can't help but to feel a bit depressing. I should be loosing weight. I know my calorie intake is less than my actual burn rate. Well, talking about it helps, I hope.

Day 231 - Lunch Plans

For the first time in weeks, I actually have to think about what to have for lunch. In my haste to get to work this morning, I forgot to stop by the market and pick up lunch for the week. This really throws a spanner into my schedule since I usually rely upon the fact that my one meal at work is fixed. Well, I'll have to think about what to eat for a change. Perhaps I'll have a small salad. My nutritionist did mentioned that I didn't get enough fruits and vegetable.

The verdict for the experiment yesterday is still uncleared.  I can digest the beef noodles, but with all of the things I ate, it's a wonder that I only gain .6 pounds from yesterday.  I still need to drink more fluid than I am doing now at home.  It seemed that at work, I can regiment myself better to the drinking schedule.

Day 229 - Beef Noodle Experiment

A bit of a late post (19 minutes past Saturday).

According to my brother, Van Nuys Costco supposedly have better selection than our local store.  After I look through the place, the one and only item that they seemed to be carrying that our store is missing is Healthy Choice ice cream.  Well, one is more than none.

We have the beef noodle take out from Noodle King for dinner.  In the past, I opted for just the soup.  Today, I tried to eat 1/2 of the soup and 1/2 of the noodle.  We'll see how this pans out.

Day 228 - Second Belt, Second Notch

I bought new pants and belt last weekend.  After feeling a bit tight for the first couple of days, I was able able to slip down another notch on Wednesday.  This morning, it actually feel ok to wear it 2 holes in, so here as I sit typing this blog entry, I'm on my second belt after surgery and second hold in.

I did 3.8 MPH again this morning.  Once again, for the first 5 minutes, my left knee feel a bit of pain, and I adjusted my stride and I feel better after.  Not sure if this will hold up, but I really need to buy those knee brace that my doctor have recommended.

I went to support meetings a couple of weeks after my surgery.  For some reason, most of the previous people who were there when I first join have migrated to the longer term support group.  It felt odd that I'm the longest term post surgery person there.  The topic on my last support meeting is vitamin supplements. And I found out that Cedars-Sinai changed their supplement requirement, adding more Calcium and Vitamin D.  Guess I'll have to buy some calcium citrate chewable on my next Costco run.

Day 227 - Increase the Pace of the Exercise

This morning while doing my morning exercise, I set the pace to 3.8 MPH, up from 3.7.  My knees (especially the left one) does feel a bit more exerted, but not enough for me to stop.

I finally got around to use the George Foreman grill that I bought prior to surgery.  Thus far, I have almost daily use of the Magic Bullet blender.  The NuWave Oven also has its fair share of use.  For some reason, the George Foreman grill never got its day in the sun.  After fiddling around for a while, I think I got the hang of how to use the thing.  It does require that I set an audible timer, and it does require pre-heating of the grilling surface.  But for the most part, it works well enough after I figure out how long to cook the meat.

Day 226 - Skoll and Arcturis

Yesterday was Support Group Tuesday, so I had a long drive home after the meeting.  Didn't help that there was a major accident on my way home delaying my drive.

After running through Fidie through Lost City of Tol'Vir and Kasukabe through The Deadmines, I dusted off Kycilia as she's parked at Skoll's spawn point beneath Temple of Storm.  I gave a cursory tour of all of Skoll's spawn points as well as Arcturis's one spawn point in Grizzly Hills before heading off to Uldum to do the 2 daily quests for reputation points.

Uldum also features a rather large spawn spot for another rare pet Madexx, which is a model used for Horde guild mount, much like Sambas is the Alliance guild mount.  While scanning the spawn point, I was slowly leveling my Shatterhand Warhound and grinding for leather.  Stonecore is the random dungeon that shows up and for a change the group is a competent pick up group.  When we finished that dungeon,  it was late enough for me to go to bed.  I was already at Menethil Harbor to go to eastern part of Northrend as opposed to taking the boat from Stormwind.  As it turns out, the flight is almost as long and just as boring.  Minutes later I reach Storm Peaks and start my scan.  First two spawn points are clear and the spawn point beneath Temple of Storm has a hit.  This is what happened:
Taming Skoll
10 Seconds later, I have my fifth Spirit Beast Skoll:
Skoll at the foot of Temple of Storm in Storm Peaks
I was happy and fly back to Amberpine Lodge and logged out for the night.  This morning before my morning exercise, I logged in to check on Arcturis, since his one and only spawn point is right outside of the Alliance town.  Sure enough he's right there.  And here he is:
Arcturis outside of Amberpine Lodge in Grizzly Hills

2 Spirit Beast tamed in 5 hours.  Now I done with Spirit Beast hunt until the next Spirit Beast.  And to think my first Spirit Beast I tame was only back at March 07 2011 when I accidentally flew over him on my way back to Stormwind.  Now, I'm trying to figure out what else to get.

One thing I don't do is camping.  I will patrol around all of the exotic pet's spawn once or twice onto the next pet's spawn point.  I've never have a exotic pet just spawn while camping.  Another thing I noticed is that timing is important.  All of my exotic pet with the exception of Loque'nahak are tamed at either very late in server time or very early.  Don't dwell on them if you don't see them in the spawn point, just move on and do something else.

Day 225 - Hunting for the Rare Pets

On my last fly by of Skoll and Arcturis, I managed to have my first NPCScan alert of the wolf.  Too bad he's dead.  Well, he will be mine one day. (addendium 03-23-11, ok, one day later)

Here's the picture of Shatter Hand Warhound that I mentioned that can be tamed by any hunter.  I didn't have time to go back to Hellfire Ramparts or Hellfire Peninsula, so I opted to just take the picture at Grizzly Hills.

Another modest week of weight loss.  2.4 lb.  I'm still not sure if I'm eating too much or not enough.  I have an appointment with dietitian tomorrow to discuss all of that.

I look through my closet and took out all of my older pants for donation.  I save 1 4x/30 pants for future photo opportunity.  But I didn't find any pants smaller than 46/30.  I went out to Target to get 2 things, new pants and belt.  I'll be wearing size 40/30 pants using the 36-40 size belt.  At least these new pants will fit better and my major problem with belts will be resolve.

Before my work out this morning, I went online to hunt for more Spirit Beast.  I logged my hunter at one of the spawn point of Skoll.  Immediately after I login, I notice a Troll Hunter who obiviously have the same idea as me.  Since there's no point in fighting him for the pet (he can always kill me or the pet I'm trying to tame), I flew to the other 2 spawn point without much success.  I decided to fly back to the other 2 Spirit Beast spawn point before I start my exercise.  Right at the next to the last possible spawn point, NPCScan fired off and told me that Gondria is around.  No other hunter is around, so I landed and target the beast.  The last two tame, I've messed up the range to the beast, so my freeze trap is way off.  But since I have 12 levels on this beast, the odd of him killing me is nil.  10 seconds later, Gondria is mine.

After a rather long day, I was in the process of doing some Wildhammer Clan daily quest while waiting for the daily heroic queue, and on the second possible spawn point, NPCScan informed me that Sambas is available for taming.  I landed immediately, target and dismiss my current pet.  10 seconds, I stabled my sabertooth tiger and kept the mane lion as my DPS cat for Survival spec hunter.

Here he is at the scene of the crime:

Day 221 - Another Notch

I've been able to use the last notch of my current belt for a while but opted not to go there since my weight really doesn't match that yet. This morning, I finally felt comfortable enough to use that last hold in the belt.  It feels tight, but I believe it to be a motivator for me.

Odd thing though, I'm feeling hungry earlier than I should.  Right about when I get home at 5PM, I feels famish.  The past couple of days, I've been eating kimchii both to stop the hunger and to add some dietary fiber for my dinner.  Looking back that might not be the best idea as kimchii is very high in sodium.  I'll need to have something else.

Day 220 - Decline in the Quality of PuG Tank

Over the past 2 days, my boomkin druid Lonchaneyjr has been trying and failing to complete a single heroic dungeon.  Today alone, 3 separate tanks came and failed at tanking even the trash pack.  My main character is a paladin tank, so I understand the mechanic involved, and it's not that hard.  Also the tanks have this tendency of just leave if they draw an instance they don't like, and wait out 15 minutes.  My non tank's wait time is 30 to 40 minutes, and this is just infuriating.

Day 219 - Shadowfang Keep

I did Daily Heroic on 3 of my alt last night.  I tried to geared my druid first because she's the worst geared character.  She got Grim Batol in her first try.  Not the easiest dungeon even in normal mode, and the tank we got was utterly bad.  Didn't even got pass the second boss.  What followed is the repeat of Shadowfang Keep, it itself not the easiest heroic dungeon.  I then queue up my warlock alt, and sure enough while she's finishing up Twilight Highland quests, she also got Shadowfang Keep.

In between everything else, I log into my hunter alt and scan for the remaining Spirit Beast in Northrend.  I didn't expect to get them right away, but this is a long drawn out process.  Of course, when the daily heroic, Shadowfang Keep shows up as well.  The other random party member sort of sneer down when I'm running around with a Spirit Beast, but I had to explained to them that I'm leveling Loque'nahak and collecting the rest of them.  I do have a raiding Survival talent set.  However, it's been a couple of days, and I have to re-adjust the shot rotation again.  One thing I didn't realize is how loud Loque'nahak is in combat.  It's got to be the loudest pet I've had in my collection.

I went off to Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles for lunch yesterday.  I ordered the Country Boy off the menu which is 3 chicken wings with potato salad.  I know I can digest the salad, but only eat half.  The 3 chicken wings are a bit more than I would like, but the meal is good.  The rest of the group from the office also enjoy this restaurant which is situated right next to a KFC.

I've start parking my hunter at Northrend continent in hope of getting the rest of the Spirit Beast. Yesterday, I got Loque'nahak, the original Spirit Beast on my 4th day or survey through Sholazar Basin.  Loque'nahak has a rather large spawn ares with many points of possible spawn location.  But the NPCScan did its job and there he is.  Now Skoll (Thunder Wolf), Gondria (Tiger) and Arcturis (Bear) remains.  Here's what my Loque'nahak looks like:

Well, the Daylight Saving Time. Technically it's 9:44AM. It feels like 8:44AM.  Since I figure the rest of my family won't be using the Basil I bought on Friday, I'm using as much of it as I can for my breakfast.  With the omelette breakfast, I didn't have to use protein powder in my latte, which makes the drink a lot easier to go down.  The blender tends to add a lot of air into the drink.  Without that added air, the latte taste much better.

Here's what the omelette looks like steaming after I get it out of the pan.
Delicious looking isn't it?

Even after yesterday's meal (1/2 of the saute spinach.  Unfortunately, my family ate the rice I was counting on for lunch.  4 dumplings with 1 bowl of spicy tofu with ground beef for dinner), I was able to get some traction on my program.  I'm thinking of stir fry pork with basil and ginger for lunch.

Day 214 - Heroic Dungeon

As of today with some minor piece of upgrade of gears, all 7 of my level 85 characters can now do daily heroic dungeons.  The last one to cross that threshold is the shadow priest, Fidie.  I'm now just doing daily dungeon once on Dianora and Kycilia.  I'll concentrate on doing daily heroic on my clothies characters first, and to grind to at least revered reputation with the the various faction.

Today isn't exactly one of my more memorable day.  The chicken nuggets I ate last night didn't agree with me.  And I think I really over did it at lunch with the hot and sour soup from Noodle King.

I bought some saute spinach for this weekend.  Lets hope that's what I needed.

Day 213 - Splinting Time

I currently have 7 level 85 characters in World of Warcraft.  I really should start doing daily heroic on Dianora, my main characters at least once a day just to get the valor point gears.  Currently the best geared alt is Kycilia, because hunter is really easy to play.  For a change, I actually did random heroics yesterday on Kycilia, Nodame, and Lonchaneyjr, 3 different characters on heroic is a new record for me.  However, I really need to trim down the amount of grind I'm doing.  Kycilia is near the point where only valor point gear is upgrade.  So I need to get the other 3 characters up and running Ogiue, Kasukabe and Fidie.  The random heroic wait time is now anywhere between 30 to 40 minutes.  And Kycilia have ran out of all of the expansion quests, so I'll probably just do the daily Therazane quests and concentrate on getting the other characters on the quests.

Day 212 - Ghostcrawler - Seven Months out

Slight addendum:  This post was started last night prior to me going to sleep to put in the Warcraft related material.  After I got into the office, I realized that this is the seventh month out for me since surgery.  Total weight loss this month is 10.4 pounds, a bit low in terms of my monthly average, but still better than my worst month (December to January 8.4 pounds).  I'm just glad that the weight loss has started again.

So after a long drive back home from the support meeting, I decided to run at least 1 daily heroic on my hunter and then hunt for the other Cataclysm Spirit Beast, Ghostcrawler named after the online handle used by the lead designer of World of Warcraft.  After I finished up the Therazane daily quests, I ported over to Vashj'ir to start my camping of Ghostcrawler.  After I got through my daily heroic dungeon (Stonecore where my ghost wolf died after every single boss fight), I logged out and removed the creature cache and try to scan for the creature again.  Lo and behold on my first pass, the object of my desire appears.  Now, as a added benefit and joke, freezing trap does not work on this creature.  It has 1.5 million health and it's basically unkillable due to the signature spell Nerfbat that's cast continuously and will render attackers unable to attack.  Naturally once you tamed the creature, this overpowering spell goes away.

Well, here's the Spirit Beast Ghostcrawler alongside a Worgen Kycilia in Abyssal Depths:

Day 206 - More Blood Test

This coming Monday I'll have my quarterly check up with my primary care physician.  Learning my lesson from previous blood test, I opted to get tested a bit early to ensure that the test result is prompt.

I'm not too crazy about blood test.  Back when I'm much fatter, finding my vein was a challenge even for clinics that specialized in blood test.  It's easier now, but still the pain and my general aversion to needle remains.  Due to the need to be fasting, I have to make my protein latte and carry it with me on a water bottle that's too big for the job.  Perhaps I can dig out some of the old travel coffee mug for this kind of job in the future.

I did two glucose measurement this morning.  For some reason, the first one came up much higher at 101, which is higher than Ive been in weeks.  I did another reading after my morning exercise and that number is more in line with my general trend. I did the make up 30 minutes walk yesterday, and did another one this morning.  My thighs still feels the burn right now.  Perhaps I can actually try to get that extra 15 minutes I've always want to do in the afternoon.  God knows, after the weather gets really hot, I won't be able to do that.

Day 205 - On-Call & Blue Screen of Death

I'm On-Call this week.  That means I'm the point person on all of the incidents that comes into our service queue at work.  That also means that it's important for me to be able to access my own computer at work at home.  About 2 weeks ago, the Citrix farm made some changes that made the refresh rate on my RDP session to my desktop slower than usual.  That and the fact within 1 week, my desktop suffered 2 Blue Screen of Death that prompted me to drive into work (or in today's case, earlier than I had plan) doesn't make my on-call a pleasant experience.

Since my work computer went BSOD this morning, I had to skip my morning workout.  I still plan to do a make up session when I get home.

The number this morning is a bit weird.  I got waken up at 4:20AM this morning by an incident, and fully awake at 5AM by my phone's alarm clock.  The blood pressure measurement was OK, and as expected my weight finally went down.  I am a bit worry the glucose measurement.  As far as I know, I'm not eating anything that puts my number consistently higher up.  Well, I'm back to my regular protein-latte breakfast, steam lunch and I'll be having steak with saute onion for dinner.

Day 204 - Photo of Basil Omelette

I decided to use Magic Bullet to blend the basil leaf and eggs this morning to make the basil omelette instead of hand whisk with chopstick.  It works well enough, although I always though that the blender always added too much volume by adding air into the liquid.  While the meal itself was ok, I did went overboard on the speed in which I ate.  It's 90 minutes later, and I'm still feeling the effect of the meal.

Here's what it looks like before I eat it:

Regarding my reading this morning, my weight should be a bit lower as I'm working to deal with the return of constipation again.  Ate too many iron pill yesterday by mistake.  The glucose reading can be explained by the excess sauce on the leftover Japanese meal.  My number should be better tomorrow as I'll be having just steam fish with ginger tonight.
